«Dyscalculia - how the brain learns to calculate»

Around six per cent of all children in Switzerland suffer from a maths disorder - dyscalculia. Early detection can protect against frustration and fear of failure and prevent psychological problems, says neuroscientist Karin Kucian in her video presentation.

Maths skills are essential for successful participation in school, social and professional life. However, around six per cent of all children in Switzerland suffer from an arithmetic disorder. «The earliest possible diagnosis can protect against frustration and fear of failure and prevent psychological problems,» says Dr Karin Kucian.

PD Dr Karin Kucian is an expert in the field of dyscalculia. In her scientific studies at the Centre for MR Research at the University Children's Hospital Zurich, she investigates the neural and behavioural characteristics of numerical cognition and dyscalculia as well as their development.

In addition to her research findings on the causes of dyscalculia, the educationalist and neuroscientist also presents the symptoms and measures that parents and teachers can use to specifically support affected children in the video of her «Kosmos Kind» lecture on the topic of dyscalculia from 16 May 2023 (49:56 min).
