I love my job, cutting hair. It's exciting to see what happens to people when I do it. Many people define themselves very much by their hair. But after my apprenticeship, I felt like I was only scratching the surface. I wanted to learn more, but I didn't know exactly what. Psychology, perhaps?
I completed my vocational baccalaureate, did a year's internship in an HR department, went travelling and then began studying business psychology at a university of applied sciences. That was it for haircutting, I thought, although I still did my family's and a few friends' hair. I couldn't and didn't want to do any more than that.
When people talk about their hair, they often talk about how they are feeling.
But studying wasn't the right thing for me. I still didn't know exactly what I wanted to do, when I came across the Coaching Academy. There, I trained in several courses to become a coach for children, young people and adults. For almost a year now, I have been working in schools in Bern, where I do exercises and hold discussions with groups and individual children and young people.
Coaching and hairdressing flow into one another
I am interested in people's self-esteem. I encounter this in the hairdressing salon as well as with children and young people at school. I also offer coaching sessions in my own coaching room. It is located on the farm where I grew up. And here I also have a hairdressing salon, together with a colleague.
Coaching and hairdressing flow into one another here. I offer hair consultations for people who want advice without having their hair cut. When people talk about their hair, they often talk about how they are feeling too.
The essence of my work is to help people discover their inner beauty and express it through their charisma.
We also offer conscious haircuts. Together with the customer, I determine how she wants her hair to feel, and then I cut it that way – without a mirror. Some want to look in the mirror at the end, others say they want to keep the feeling and go home without seeing their new hairstyle. We also work exclusively with natural products. The chemicals I had to use as a conventional hairdresser were one of the reasons why I no longer wanted to practise this profession.
During my coaching training, I rediscovered the joy of cutting hair. Both professions are about helping people find their self-worth. Many people hope that a new hairstyle will make them feel better about themselves. The essence of my work is to help people discover their inner beauty and express it through their charisma.
