It was always clear to us that we’d split parental leave more or less equally. Had I not had the opportunity to be at home with our son for almost a year, I probably wouldn’t have found out who he really is or what his needs are. That said, there hasn’t been much time to just sit and enjoy being in his company, most of the time is spent sorting out practical things. It really is a full time job. I have a hard time understanding why anyone would not want to be at home with their kid, since they decided to have one. Sure, money does play a role, but there must be more to parental leave than just the financial side of things. I think I’ve learnt a lot about myself during my time at home with Elling, including how much I’m capable of – despite the sleep deprivation.
