Our topics in February

Editor-in-chief Nik Niethammer presents the topics of the February issue: New family models, alcohol abuse in the family and what high blood pressure in children means. The new issue will be available from newsagents from Tuesday 6 February or can be ordered online.
Nik Niethammer talks about the topics in our February issue.

Dear reader
There are letters that go down like oil when you read them. And they alone make this magazine worthwhile. «I am the mother of two children aged 7 and 4,» writes Mirjam Lang from Bubikon ZH. «I regularly receive your «Fritz+Fränzi» from school, which I read with enthusiasm. We were very touched by the article about Joel and his family, we think your fundraising campaign is fantastic and we really hoped it would work. We have made a small contribution, it came from the heart, and we wish the family only the best and above all lots of joy with the suitable four-legged friend.»
Many thanks, dear Mrs Lang, to you and all the other donors, big and small, to our «An autism assistance dog for Joel» campaign. We are overwhelmed; with your generous support, we have actually raised the required amount of CHF 30,000. What happens now? Joel will meet his guide dog during the week of 12 February. We will report on the meeting in the next issue (to be published on 7 March).

What children's ears need:
1 I love you!
2. well done!
3 I'm proud of you!
4 You are something special!
5. it's nice that you exist!
6 I believe in you!

A year ago, I wrote in this space: «We at Schweizer ElternMagazin are a little proud to have Michèle Binswanger on board as «Society Journalist of the Year 2016», as honoured by the industry magazine «Schweizer Journalist».» Well, the proud feeling continues, as our columnist was once again voted the best in her profession in the «Society» category last year. One of the reasons given by the jury was that «Michèle Binswanger stands for self-confident feminism without political correctness, has a taste for social disruption, is a real source of inspiration, unideological and outspoken, always has an opinion outside the mainstream.»
In this issue, you can see for yourself that the graduate philosopher and mother of two is always in tune with the times: in her latest column, our author describes what puberty does to her daughter. «Not knowing who you are and where you're heading can be exhausting. But there is no greater adventure than finding yourself.» A wonderful, very personal text.
And a note on our own behalf: Stefanie Rietzler joins the team of experts for «One question - three opinions» with this issue. Stefanie Rietzler is a psychologist, author («Successful learning with ADHD») and runs the Academy for Learning Coaching in Zurich together with Fabian Grolimund. The first question to our new colleague is a tough one: «My eight-year-old daughter wants crutches for her birthday,» writes a mum. «Now I'm wondering: can you play «be sick» with crutches?» The answers from Nicole Althaus, Peter Schneider and Stefanie Rietzler.
I hope you enjoy reading this issue and find it enlightening and, as always, look forward to receiving mail from you.
Yours sincerely, Nik Niethammer
