Online survey - Media behaviour of parents
Is a parent's limited bonding ability due to their personal history or a consequence of their media behaviour? The online survey conducted by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) is investigating this question. Because: «So far, this distinction has not been conclusively clarified,» says Till Ernst, head of the online survey at the ZHAW. Mothers and fathers who look after a child between 0 and 12 months are addressed.
Connection between attachment behaviour and media consumption?
Attachment theory describes people's innate need to build an emotional relationship with other people. An important foundation for this is laid in (early) childhood. Studies show that a secure attachment enables children to move independently in their environment, learn social behaviour and form stable relationships.
However, young people and adults who were unable to form a secure bond with their parents during their childhood find this more difficult later on - for example, when they become parents themselves. Researchers have found that mothers and fathers with an insecure attachment style tend to use media (e.g. smartphones) to an unhealthy extent in the presence of their children. As a result, they tend to develop a more distant relationship with their children.
