More readers, more subscriptions - and new plans

The Swiss parents' magazine is now read by 180,000 readers, which is an increase of 17 per cent! This is according to the MACH Basic 2017-1 study, which was conducted from September 2015 to September 2016 and published today. Editor-in-chief Nik Niethammer on the reasons for the growth and the plans for a new magazine.

An increase of 17 per cent: Where do the additional readers come from?

Compared to the period March 2015 - March 2016, the increase was as much as 22 per cent. Schweizer ElternMagazin has seen an increase in subscribers in particular: Compared to the previous year, we are delighted to have 54 per cent more subscriptions, and compared to two years ago, the increase is even 135 per cent. In a recent reader survey, 75 per cent of all participants gave us a «very good» rating; 90 per cent stated that they could directly benefit from our content for their family situation. Apparently we are doing a lot of things right.

What are the reasons for the increase in readership?

Quality. Quality. Quality. We succeed in presenting complex topics such as eating disorders, ADHD or high sensitivity in children in a way that is read and understood. We support parents of school-age children in both good and difficult times, but avoid problem management and instead focus on solution-orientated journalism. There is nothing more comforting for parents than the certainty that they are not alone with a problem or a question.

How long will the Schweizer ElternMagazin still be available in printed form?

We believe: for a very long time to come. A small, fine editorial team works on every monthly magazine and every special issue with as much passion and care as if it were the last issue. The reader can feel that. We are also constantly optimising our distribution channels. In addition to schools, educational colleges, hospitals, doctors' surgeries and advice centres also receive our magazine. The feedback has been extremely positive.

What impact has the relaunch of the online portal had?

Very pleasing: since the relaunch on 1 June 2016, www.fritzundfraenzi.ch has increased page views by 145% and doubled the time spent on the site. We are interacting much more with readers and have massively expanded our social media activities under the leadership of Online Editorial Manager Bianca Fritz. Over 60 per cent of all readers now come to us via Facebook and Twitter.

What's next?

Until now, we have targeted parents of children who attend at least the first primary school class. Now we will also be addressing the parents of kindergarten children. The first of four issues of «Kindergarten» will be published in mid-August with a print run of 50,000 copies each.

What can readers of the kindergarten booklet expect?

Many parents are insecure. In studies, around two thirds say that they are often plagued by self-doubt, even though they do their best every day. We want to take this into account with the KiGa booklet and do everything we can to make parents feel strong and confident in early childhood education, to resist the social pressure for perfection a little. That they develop a strong self-image of themselves and that they can practise relaxed parenting. That they realise that they don't have to be perfect, but that good enough is good enough. For them and for their children.
