First steps into the virtual world
Even more important than the question of how long your child is allowed to use a device is the rule that children should not be left alone and unsupervised when taking their first digital steps. Whether it's a smartphone, tablet, computer or games console - children should always be supervised and only come into contact with content that is appropriate for their age. And: Don't use the devices as babysitters.
Gripping instead of just wiping
For young children, the first digital applications can be interactive picture books or memory and concentration games. If you play memory games on the tablet with your children, make sure that they don't spend more time with virtual than analogue toys. Digital games do not replace conventional games; they often address other skills that can be trained.
You are a role model
If parents switch on their smartphone at every opportunity or sit at the computer in front of their children, the child will also gravitate towards the screens. Be a role model: use digital media selectively and, if possible, not in front of the children. Make sure that your child does not immediately pull out a tablet or game console when they are bored.
Technical aids such as parental controls or blocking lists for certain websites can certainly help to prevent children from deliberately or accidentally consuming content that is not intended for them. Such tools are called «Kids Corner» or «Kids Mode» on Android devices, while Apple has a similar function integrated into its operating system.
Restrict in-app purchases
Parents can also activate time limits, deactivate in-app purchases and set up password prompts so that the little ones are restricted in their use and cannot download or place orders themselves.
My tip: Only allow in-app purchases with a password prompt, otherwise it can quickly become expensive.
