Are video games for children better than their reputation?
When children play, all is right with the world. Except when they do it on a PC or games console. Gaming has a bad reputation. Computer games make you aggressive, apathetic and addicted. People who play games can't concentrate at school and get bad grades - or so the widespread assumption goes. But is this absolutely true?
The subject is increasingly being researched by scientists. Various studies today at least suggest that gaming can have a positive effect on the development of young people as well as negative influences.
Gaming as a team task?
First things first: gaming for hours on end is not healthy. Young people need their boundaries, and these need to be enforced. But video games are part of the common culture for many young people today. They experience something here that they can talk about in the playground the next day. Parents should keep this important social aspect in mind when limiting the time spent on the computer and console. Many games are also team-based. Young people are active in a group, work together on a problem and solve it together.
The dose makes the poison!
Various studies indicate that young people who play regularly (but not excessively!) can concentrate longer and better. Some study authors even suspect a connection between regular gaming and better social skills.
Gamers are better able to deal with frustration, as regular failure is often part of the gaming experience. Many young people speak English with their fellow players in online games, which promotes language skills.
Gaming is learning qualities that are increasingly desirable in today's world.
In contrast to television, video games are activating. Players have to solve problems - how is often left to their creativity. They are mentally challenged and have to concentrate in order to succeed. In the event of failure, they have to try out new strategies and be able to react very flexibly. These are qualities that are increasingly desirable in today's world.
So when it comes to gaming - as always in life - it's all about finding the right balance.
