After Corona: Back to normality
Many mums and dads were initially keen not to make the coronavirus crisis seem like a crisis so as not to frighten their children. However, when parents relaxed their strict rules on screen use, their children realised that the coronavirus pandemic was a serious matter. Because there was no school, friends were not available and parents were constantly working from home, children had a lot of free time at home. So they were allowed to spend more time with computers and tablets. That was okay during this particular time.
Once schools reopen, many parents want to return children's screen time to a normal level. The previous content and time rules on how and when children and young people are allowed to use digital media will then apply again. However, this return to a regulated use of smartphones, tablets and computers is likely to be difficult for some. The change should therefore be made deliberately and the stricter rules should be introduced carefully. The children will need some time to get used to the new circumstances. As parents work less from home, they will be better able to fulfil their role model function again.
The play equipment as a working tool
The coronavirus crisis has also had positive effects in terms of media use: pupils have learnt to use tablets, laptops and smartphones as work tools during this time instead of just using them for entertainment. Many can now use them to do homework and send it to their teachers or upload it to a platform, do research on the internet or take part in a video conference. This adds value to the devices.
The switch to a normal level of media use also opens up discussions about the advantages and disadvantages of real and media-mediated social interaction. Another positive aspect is that we are all learning to appreciate the value of face-to-face interaction once again as a result of the reduction in physical contact. And that's a good thing.
