It doesn't always have to be abroad to spend a family-friendly holiday. Switzerland offers many beautiful excursion destinations for every taste - whether for playing, barbecuing, hiking or experiencing adventure. We went in search of (insider) tips and found what we were looking for. Here are our ten favourites:

Elefantentobel in Zurich ZH
The two-hour hike leads from Zurich Burgwies along the Elefantenbach stream, through the Stöckentobel and Werenbachtobel. The highlight is the original-sized elephant that stands in the stream and gives it its name. There is also a Robinson playground and various barbecue areas on this impressive circular hike. Also suitable for families with small children.

Sunnehüsli on Lake Constance TG
A wonderfully idyllic garden pub with a playground and petting animals - in Güttingen on Lake Constance. The fish crispies are particularly recommended. A very nice place to linger, for guests of all ages.

Sihl jump at Hirzel ZH
This is pure adventure for children: climbing on Nagelfluh rocks, making a fire, swimming in the Sihl or walking through tunnels or even over a swaying bridge, depending on the load? Everything is possible on the hike in the Sihl valley. To top it all off, the «Sihlmättli» restaurant beckons and caters for the hiking families. If the weather is fine, booking is essential. The Sihlsprung is a narrowing of the Sihl through Nagelfluh and stalactite. Standing on the bridge after rainfall is a magical experience, even for adults.

Meggenhorn Castle in Meggen LU
In this castle, you can even peek into the princess's bedroom. The farm belonging to the castle has a petting enclosure, access to the lake and a large playground. An excursion is particularly worthwhile with small children and younger schoolchildren. Park your car at the entrance to the castle park. Then it's a 15-minute walk - suitable for pushchairs. Fabulous: the marvellous view over Lake Lucerne. Picnic facilities are available on site. There is an orangery above the farm, but it is more upmarket.

Adventure rope park near Disentis/Mustér GR
Brave and older children and teenagers will love the adventure rope park. In addition to climbing and abseiling, the programme also includes cable car rides and balancing over a suspension bridge. The bravest can ride their bikes over the high wire or climb up the via ferrata. If it's a bit too much for you, you can practise archery or take part in a crystal hunt. You can also take part in gold panning on the Jungrhein in this region.

Indoor surfing in Ebikon LU
If Peter doesn't have a good day, which of course we hope he doesn't, the indoor surf wave in Ebikon offers a great change for young and old water rats. Whether beginner or advanced, in groups or as a private lesson - there are various ways to get into the wild water.

Join in the circus at Bettmeralp VS
Want to perform as an artist yourself? The Marotte circus school offers children and young people aged between 7 and 16 a week's circus holiday in July, followed by a gala performance on the Bettmeralp.

Park Sauvabelin in Lausanne VD
For people from Lausanne, the Bois du Sauvabelin is like the Gurten in Bern or the Üetliberg in Zurich - nothing special. For day trippers from German-speaking Switzerland, the small hill in the French-speaking forests is a highlight: a nice playground, a pub to stop off at and then this imposing «Kappla Tower» with an even more impressive view.

Waterfall hike in Pontresina (GR)
The new «Cascada da Bernina» waterfall trail is not only a feast for the eyes with all its waterfall platforms, but also a Rhaetian Railway spectacle. Completely without cogwheels, but electrified, it masters passages around tight bends and over historic viaducts.

Ballenberg Open-Air Museum near Brienz BE
The Ballenberg Open-Air Museum in the Bernese Oberland is an impressive experience for young and old. The extensive grounds are home to more than 100 historic buildings from all parts of Switzerland, native farm animals, original gardens and fields. Good footwear is a must. There are several places to eat and rest. You immediately feel like you've been transported back in time.
