My child has received a dick pic, a penis picture. How should they behave?

They should not react and should delete and block such contacts immediately and report the contacts and profiles if necessary. We need to support children in saying no when it becomes unpleasant for them.

What should I do if my ten-year-old daughter comes across pornographic content online?

The topic of pornography is not new, it has just become even more accessible. I can already see very explicit content on YouTube. We have to address this because it can't be prevented. If the child is not at home on the computer, where precautions and settings can be made, they may come across such content elsewhere. It is therefore important to prepare children, to accompany them, to seek dialogue with them and to inform them about potential dangers. Not addressing the issue is not an alternative.

Too early and frequent porn consumption can lead to the inability to experience a beautiful, uplifting, appreciative and yet fulfilling sexuality.

What consequences can sex sites on the internet have on my child?

The earlier children and adolescents consume pornographic content and the more intensively and regularly they do so, the less favourable the effects on both their mental and physical health. It can lead to an inability to experience beautiful, uplifting, appreciative yet exciting and fulfilling sexuality where both or all partners can feel respected. In addition, hardcore porn with violence and humiliation certainly has different effects on the psyche than soft porn.

When should I start talking to my child about paedophiles online?

As soon as the child is online independently, this topic must be discussed. For me, this is also part of sexual education so that the child behaves carefully online if such people try to make contact. And there are also specific tips, such as not sending pictures to strangers, especially not sexy pictures, and calling parents or another trusted person if something seems strange.

What should I do if I suspect that a paedophile is trying to make contact with my child?

It makes sense to file a complaint very quickly. If prohibited content is discovered online, for example on Instagram or Snapchat, the authorities often carry out a house search. There may be more to it than this if someone becomes visibly conspicuous in this way. By filing a criminal complaint, you can make an important contribution to ensuring that any sex offenders are caught. Many sex offenders are repeat offenders. It is then helpful if previous incidents have already been recorded.

What is sexting?

Sexting is the consensual sending of nude photos and videos or messages between two people within a relationship. It is considered flirting by digital means. Young people are also practising flirting, discovering their sexuality and how to play with it in a relationship.

Being naked is something natural, but also private. When private pictures go online, they are no longer private.

Thomas Feibel

The danger, however, is that everything that is sent digitally does not necessarily remain in this relationship, but also goes out. It can be very unpleasant for the young person if the picture ends up with friends or strangers. Sometimes this happens out of carelessness or because the ex-partner wants to take revenge after the relationship ends.

How can I prevent my son from sending nude photos of himself?

By talking about privacy. Nudity is something natural, but also private. When private pictures go online, they are no longer private. Even a good friend can forward a sensitive photo to all his contacts. We can explain privacy very well with the invention of the toilet door: There are places where we want to be unobserved and undisturbed. But precisely because children and young people emulate their role models, they have no sense that they are also overstepping their own boundaries with a provocative pose or scanty clothing.

What should I do if my daughter wants to be «sexy» online?

I find this topic difficult. Because I'm focussing on the fact that girls have to protect themselves from bad men and are not allowed to show themselves. Ultimately, this attitude is a form of victim blaming.

Who is the problem here? The girl in the skimpy shirt or the stranger who reacts to it?

Ulla Autenrieth

But who is the problem here? The girl in the skimpy shirt or the stranger who reacts to it? It is clear that parents want to protect their child from such attacks. My advice: Look at other accounts and the respective reactions together with your child and ask: How would you deal with it if you received such feedback?

Who should victims of cyberbullying turn to?

Children and young people should turn to a trusted person, i.e. parents, relatives, a teacher or a youth leader. Parents can also get help, for example from the Pro Juventute parent counselling service or the parent helpline. The police prevention centres are also good contacts. It becomes difficult when it is an official offence and the police have to take action. In other words, you should think carefully beforehand about whether this might trigger something that could make much bigger waves - which is not always ideal for children and young people. But it's always advisable to contact the police if you're dealing with threats, blackmail or coercion.
