Special support programme for girls

3 questions for Dr Beat Schuler, Head of Young Talent Promotion at the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW). The SATW is committed to comprehensive technical education and has launched a new support programme specifically for girls.

Mr Schuler, who are the Swiss Tec Ladies?

The Swiss Tec Ladies are around 60 young women who are part of a national mentoring programme that specifically promotes interest in mathematics, IT, natural sciences and technology, the so-called MINT disciplines. The 13 to 16-year-old girls can qualify for the subsequent mentoring programme by taking part in the online challenge.

Why do you specifically promote girls, are boys completely excluded?

Various studies have shown that girls often lack confidence in technical and IT professions, even if they are talented in these disciplines. These young women therefore need a greater sense of achievement and reassurance until they believe in their talent in technology and IT. In order to counteract the shortage of skilled labour and boost the self-confidence of young women in technical matters, we want to provide them with targeted support. However, boys can also take part in the online challenge. There are great prizes to be won by all participants!

What does a mentoring programme look like for a girl who has been selected?

The selected young women are given comprehensive insights into working life and are accompanied by an experienced mentor from the world of technology, with whom they can exchange ideas and who advises them. In several workshops, they learn first-hand about the diversity of technical professions, strengthen their personalities and socialise with like-minded people. We have also created a new network in which former Swiss Tec Ladies graduates, mentors and women interested in technology can support each other and exchange ideas.
