Holiday tips from the editorial team

The summer holidays are over and the autumn holidays are just around the corner. And hand on heart: who doesn't want to start booking or at least dreaming of next summer again?
After the holidays is before the holidays: With the last grains of sand in our sandals, here are our holiday tips from the editorial team for great family holidays. We'd also love to hear your favourite destinations in the comments.

Evelin Hartmann: Glamping in Holland

Our favourite place: Bakkum campsite in Holland
Bakkum campsite is located in the beautiful "Noordhollands Duinreservaat", the largest nature reserve in the Netherlands. 950 metres of footpath or cycle path separate you from the beach. Whether you arrive with your own tent or caravan or rent one of the creative accommodations: The campsite is simply laid-back and offers everything from a petting zoo to numerous playgrounds, hire prams and bikes to make children's and parents' hearts beat faster - without being too commercial. Simply Dutch and relaxed.

My tip:
If you're travelling with small children - like us - you should rent one of the beach huts, which are arranged in a semi-circle around a toddler playground. Here, even two-year-olds can go off on their own while mum and dad sit on the veranda with a coffee or red wine and keep an eye on the little ones.

Useful information:
Glamping is the new trend in glamorous camping, which has its appeal but also its price: A week in a beach house (up to 6 people) costs from 500 francs, in high season around 1200 francs. It's 874 kilometres from our home in Lucerne to Bakkum and around 860 from Zurich, so parents whose children don't like long car journeys should consider an overnight stopover or fly there. The nearest airport is Amsterdam. From here, it is easy to continue by bus and train or hire car.

Nik Niethammer: Hiking in the Upper Black Forest

Our favourite place:
The Upper Black Forest is our second family home and a paradise for hikers of all ages. The offer ranges from leisurely panoramic hiking trails to challenging single trails with many hundreds of metres of elevation gain.
There is a hut on almost every hill where you can stop for a snack and a rest. The Zastler Hütte, the Erlenbacher Hütte and the Höfener Hütte offer particularly marvellous views.
One possible starting point for a hike in the Upper Black Forest is the Stollenbacher Hütte, which is easily accessible by car.

The Feldberg, at 1492 metres the highest elevation in the Black Forest - easily accessible by car, bike or bus - is also the starting point for numerous hiking trails and high-altitude hikes. Below the Feldberg summit there is a spectacular rope park where climbers of all ages can practise their skills and courage at heights of up to 9 metres. In bad weather, we recommend a visit to the climbing centre right next to the rope park. Or in the Haus der Natur.

If you prefer swimming to hiking, we recommend the Titisee and its numerous sights in the southern Black Forest Nature Park.

My tip:
I particularly recommend a walk around the Feldsee, the largest cirque lake in the Black Forest (formed by glaciers during the last ice age), followed by a stop at the Raimatihof.
Useful information:
The journey by ICE from Zurich via Basel to Freiburg takes just under two hours. Buses are available there for the journey to the Feldberg.
The journey to Titisee-Neustadt takes 40 minutes on the Höllentalbahn (interrupted due to construction work until 31 October 2018; replacement buses are available).
The Upper Black Forest region can be reached by car from Zurich in just over two hours (tip: be sure to use the customs crossing to Germany at Rheinfelden).

Florian Blumer: Road trip on two wheels

Our favourite place:
The greatest happiness on earth is on the back of a steel horse: our favourite place is on the saddle or rather on the seat. The fact that my two-year-old daughter sees it the same way as I do is of course speculation, evil tongues would say projection. But I deduce this from the blissful look on her face when we let the landscapes pass us by with the wind in our faces and the lack of protests when I hoist her onto the seat.

Cycling holidays with a tent and sleeping bag guarantee adventure, lots of encounters and lasting experiences. You are travelling together, often don't know what to expect next, experience wonderful surprises and minor disasters. The latter weld you together and increase the adventure factor.

If you particularly want to strengthen your relationship as a couple, a solo trip is recommended. Otherwise, it is of course nice to be accompanied by one or more other tandems.

My tip:
It is essential to use a child seat instead of a trailer! With the right model (e.g. Römer), saddlebags still fit on the luggage carrier. You are more mobile and the journey is much more exciting for the passenger - and more pleasant: in summer temperatures, the trailer mutates into a sauna.

The Jura mountains in Switzerland and France are particularly beautiful (and easy to reach by train). Insider tip: Camping La Tariche near Sainte Ursanne - surrounded only by the Doubs, greenery and tranquillity. However, the campsite is small and sometimes full at weekends: it is better to call in advance and even better to go outside the main season or during the week.

Auch Mitfahren kann müde machen: Florian Blumer mit Mika, 2, im Piemont.

Travelling can also make you tired: Florian Blumer with Mika, 2, in Piedmont.
Der Cousin fährt mit: Bruder Dominik Blumer mit Laurin, fast 2, unterwegs entlang dem Doubs im Schweizer Jura.
The cousin is travelling with them: Brother Dominik Blumer with Laurin, almost 2, travelling along the Doubs in the Swiss Jura.
Useful information:
You don't need a special touring bike, a good city bike with a sturdy pannier rack will do. You don't need an electric motor either - simply adjust the length and altitude of the stages to suit your calf condition. Nevertheless, bike tours do involve some initial outlay for saddlebags, a lightweight tent, lightweight mattresses and sleeping bags, cookers etc.. But once you are equipped, there is no cheaper holiday apart from balconies and eagle owl holidays.

If you are travelling in Switzerland, it is advisable to take a look at the descriptions of the official cycle routes (which are also very well signposted along the way).

Claudia Landolt: Feasting in the most beautiful restaurant in the world

Our favourite place:
Eyes on the horizon, lips on a glass and hummus in your mouth: it's possible. What sounds as absurd to some as eating chocolate in the tropics is possible on the Basque Atlantic coast: for example at the Beach House in Anglet near Biarritz.
After a long day in the waves, nothing, really nothing is nicer than walking barefoot into the most beautiful bar in the world, sitting down at one of the marvellous white tables or lounging on a deckchair while the children splash around in the saltwater pool without anyone complaining about the screaming. Or they can play in the sand around the boat in the Beach House, which is also a bar. Sipping an aperitif or hip cucumber water, you can hear the surf in the distance and watch the sun go down. The Atlantic coast between Bordeaux and St Jean de Luz is also known as the California of France. Nowhere are the French more relaxed than here, good vibes are constantly in the air.

After a few days, you've adopted the "laisser faire" mode and walk through the supermarket in frayed shorts, unkempt but sun-kissed, dash to the bakery on a skateboard to get croissants and don't look in the mirror once a day because everything is simply wonderful. You spend the day jumping into the waves, swimming or waiting on the board for THE wave. Even small children can jump around in the waves, and all the official beaches are patrolled - Baywatch lives on!

If the water is too cold for you (the average temperature is 22 degrees, but there are swimming costumes for that), you can go to an inland lake, for example in Hossegor. At low tide, you can walk along the kilometre-long beaches and look for shells or small crabs. Or simply sit on the beach and watch the tides. And look forward to dinner in the most beautiful place in the world.

My tip: The French eat late - so make sure you book in advance. The service is excellent, the staff are young, sweet and uncomplicated, but sometimes it still takes a while. So make sure you take swimming trunks and mats for the children. Sändeli trains and cars are also allowed. Meat lovers rave about the Beach House burger, while vegans will be in their element with the veggie curry. For dessert, be sure to try the chocolate cake - it's addictive!

Useful information:
The journey to Biarritz is long and we make stops along the way. We stay in a different Airb'n'b every year, one is nicer than the other. We usually choose a house with a pool, so we swim at home in the morning and head to the sea in the afternoon.

The Basque coast offers something for all water lovers. Of course, the Atlantic is not a sea where you can spend hours bobbing around like in the Mediterranean; it is too rough and too cold for that. Nevertheless, there are stretches of beach all along the coast where you can choose the swell that suits you. However, it must be clearly stated: Hossegor is a surfing mecca and is known worldwide for its first-class waves. La Plage Centrale in Hossegor is ideal for families as there are plenty of cafés and showers - however, the waves are rather high and less suitable for small children. La Piste beach near Capbreton, on the other hand, is ideal for familiarising yourself with small waves, learning to surf (including with body boards) or watching the horizon on bunkers from the Second World War. The inland lake in Hossegor is also popular for SUP.

Not far away is Seignosse, where there is also an inland lake, the Etang Blanc, with many bathing islands, including pedalo hire. The Atlantik Parc there is great for children.

Patrik Luther: Siesta for everyone on Malle

Our favourite place:
For relaxed seaside holidays, we prefer to travel with our children to the Balearic Islands. The island of Mallorca in particular, with its long beaches and crystal-clear sea, provides us with well-deserved relaxation. Mallorca is perhaps the most underestimated holiday region, which should by no means be reduced to a party metropolis. In the north-east, our favourite part of the island, you will find a wide range of great accommodation from idyllic fincas to family resorts. The island is a wonderful place to explore; a relaxed bike tour with rental bikes, an evening stroll along the beach promenade or by public bus over a few mountain ranges to the next harbour town. For early risers, it's worth jogging up the hills by the sea. You will be rewarded with a marvellous view of the mirror-like sea and the rising sun.
The short journey with a flight time of just under one and a half hours is an experience for small children, combined with a low stress factor for the whole family. With a hire car, the north is easily accessible in around an hour from Palma. At the same time, you can enjoy the freedom of time and space, as you are not dependent on the transfer buses. If you book early enough, you can get a hire car at favourable conditions, equipped with the necessary child seats if required.

My tip:
With a small child taking a well-earned nap, accommodation with different rooms and a balcony is highly recommended whenever possible. At the same time, it's easy to organise a staggered bedtime routine at night, as parents can enjoy the summer evening in the immediate vicinity of the bedroom. On our first holiday with our first daughter, we initially only wanted to book a hotel room. We decided at the last minute in favour of the room with a mini roof terrace. An absolute stroke of luck, as we were able to enjoy both our afternoon nap and evening drink close to our potty-trained daughter without having to tiptoe around her in the small room.

Useful info:
I can recommend the Hotel Zafira Bahia in Playa de Muro (formerly Viva Bahia). This family-friendly hotel impressed us with its varied pool area, direct access to the beach, children's pool with pirate ship, excellent culinary offerings and the room with roof terrace. All the children's utensils can be purchased on site or even pre-booked. So if you're looking for a resort holiday, this is the perfect place for you.

Florina Schwander: Bädele on Lake Geneva

Our favourite place:
Ever since our daughter asked why Lac Léman was actually called Lac Clément, it's been our running joke and Lake Geneva is now called Lac Clément. We visit friends and family in French-speaking Switzerland every summer and enjoy the French-speaking paradise. This year, thanks to the heat, we mainly went swimming and for the first time to the long sandy beach in Préveranges, a highlight!

My tip:
Never overcrowded and a little insider tip even for locals: In Pully near Lausanne, there are deer and stags, a large playground, a water basin and a great view of Lake Geneva to admire in Guillemin Park.

Useful information:
We regularly sleep in the youth centre in Lausanne. It's right on the lake and close to the Vallée de Jeunesse with a great playground and more. You can also go for a swim at Vidy beach and eat something in the campsite pub.
