A pet as a Christmas present?
Before you consider giving your child a pet, you should bear in mind that a pet is more than just a playmate – it involves responsibility and long-term commitments.
The responsibility lies with the parents
Parents often hope that their child will look after the pet. However, in many cases, children soon lose interest in the animal or become disappointed when it doesn't «work out» as they had imagined. You should therefore only take on a pet if you are prepared to take full responsibility for it. You don't want it to end up in a shelter later on.

A well-considered gift rather than a spur-of-the-moment one
The decision to get a pet should never be made on a whim. Discuss with your family which pet would suit your lifestyle, or seek advice. Make sure you research the pet's needs thoroughly in advance, as well as the time and financial commitment involved. You may face significant costs, particularly if the pet falls ill.

Origin is key
Whether you decide to adopt a pet from a shelter or buy one from a breeder, it is important to meet the animal in person. Be wary of online offers: there are many unscrupulous sellers out there who breed animals in poor conditions. Such animals often have health and behavioural issues. Our checklists will help you identify reputable sellers.
Unique and brilliant animal-themed gifts
What else could you give the animal lovers in your family? How about a book about their favourite animal? Sponsoring an animal or a visit to an animal shelter are also gifts that can foster a love of animals whilst doing some good at the same time. And: children who love cuddling animals often enjoy soft toys of their favourite animals for even longer than they would a real pet.
With this in mind, we wish you a very happy festive season and every success in finding animal-themed gifts without any nasty surprises!
