Our weekend in central Schwyz

The weekend is just around the corner - and hopefully with it many hours of family time. In this series, the Swiss parents' magazine Fritz+Fränzi summarises tips for a short trip with children. This time we are travelling to central Schwyz.

Good to know

In central Switzerland you will find small to medium-sized, manageable family winter sports resorts with a comprehensive range of family activities for small to medium budgets. Thanks to their central location, they can be reached relatively quickly from all over German-speaking Switzerland. Start of the winter season: early to mid-December.

Experience

Children's ski parks with everything your family could wish for and with Swiss ski schools can be found in the destinations of Mythenregion (Einsiedeln ski school), Stoos and Sattel- Hochstuckli. The latter two also offer conveyor belts for the little ones. On the Sattel, your children will learn to ski quickly and with fun in Rondo's children's world with a magic tunnel.

Older children and teenagers with a penchant for freestyling will get their money's worth in the Mythen region and on the Stoos. The Mythenpark is located between Grossenboden and Brünnelistock in a varied terrain and is also suitable for beginners. The Shredisfaction Stoos snow park at the Holibrig ski lift is also suitable for all ages.

And there's plenty for tobogganists too: 2 kilometres in Stoos, 3.5 kilometres in Sattel-Hochstuckli (fast pistes to wonderful toboggan runs) or 1.3 kilometres in Grossenboden-Handgruobi. In these three areas, the pistes are floodlit for night sledging on certain days (Sattel-Hochstuckli also offers night skiing).
Mythen region: Fridays and Saturdays, evening ticket Fr. 13.- incl. toboggan bus from Schwyz Post to Handgruobi; toboggan hire Fr. 6.- per evening and toboggan.
Stoos: Saturdays, at the Sternegg ski lift in the centre of the village of Stoos, from 7.30 pm to 10 pm. Sledge hire and shuttle ticket to Stoos: adults Fr. 32.-, young people (16-20 years) Fr. 23.-, children (6-16) Fr. 14.-.

Scenic winter hiking and snowshoe tours in all three regions take you through the fantastic mountain and lake landscapes of Central Switzerland and to numerous ski huts and viewpoints.

The rustic and cosy piste restaurants and ski huts near the children's worlds as well as on and off the slopes are also a real treat. The «ächt SCHWYZ» restaurants, which offer authentic regional cuisine, are an «insider tip».

You can enjoy a cosy carriage ride over crunching snow in Stoos. The pace is a little faster on a sleigh ride with Siberian huskies in Muotathal, where your family can set their own pace on a winter hike in the Husky Lodge. Sleigh rides: www.stoos-muotatal.ch > Winter > Families

Overnight stay

The family, holiday and leisure park Swiss Holiday Park in Morschach does everything it can to meet the needs of families with children of all ages. Thanks to three price levels, family holidays or weekends are affordable. In addition to many leisure activities for all weathers, families benefit from numerous free services. The Swiss Holiday Park has a huge swimming pool area, its own farm and its own ski lift right on the doorstep. Children up to and including the age of 15 travel free on all Stoos mountain railways and, if they stay in the hotel and multi-bed rooms, eat for free from the children's buffet or choose from the teen menu; in general, attention is paid to a balanced diet. Books are available free of charge, as are games and puzzles (for a deposit of 20 francs).
