My favourite Mother's Day gift
I'm not a fan of Christmas and I also have a hard time with other traditional holidays. The kitschiest (and unfortunately also the most commercialised) holidays such as Valentine's Day or Mother's Day are closer to my heart. Illogical? Yes, maybe.
On the two days mentioned, I like to remember and show gratitude for something very specific, namely my loved one and my mother (or of course my father on Father's Day). I think it's fundamentally very important and nice to be grateful regularly in life and to show this gratitude in words or deeds. Consciously taking time for your mum, loved one or grandma? Absolutely. And of course, ideally not just once a year.
My best Mother's Day present so far
I received my best Mother's Day present when I wasn't even a mum yet. My husband gave me a dummy for Mother's Day five years ago. One of those dummies with «I love Mum» written on the front. «Next year on Mother's Day, I hope you'll be mum and we'll be a family,» he said, and I burst into tears with emotion.
And indeed, our wish came true and a year later, I was actually mum on Mother's Day and the pacifier was in heavy use. Perhaps I'm no longer so euphoric after the tenth brunch and the eleventh toilet roll mentioned at the beginning, but I doubt it. I'm really looking forward to Mother's Day next year and will gladly accept the Merci in whatever form it takes.
