How do I make the mobile phone childproof?
The topic remains a perennial favourite: how do we handle smartphones and tablets properly in the family? On the one hand, there is your child, who often wants to use the devices without restrictions; on the other hand, there are you as parents, who are challenged by the numerous apps and websites.
Does your child not yet have their own mobile phone, but surfs on your device? Then each family member should have their own account. This will prevent your child from accessing your data or accidentally opening the wrong app.
How to make Android devices childproof
On Android devices, except Samsung, multiple accounts can be set up easily: under «Settings > Users > Add user». Create a private area for each account with its own home screen, personal apps and settings. You can block functions or set up time limits.
Filter apps block content relevant to youth protection.
You can use the parental control settings on Android to specify which content your child cannot download from the Google Play Store. The store provides a rating of the age at which apps are recommended. There are also many filter apps available on the Android operating system that block access to content relevant to parental control.
Useful for younger children: «Kids Mode». With this function, you can set up a children's area on the parent's mobile phone in which you can store apps that your child is allowed to use. When you leave the mobile phone with your child, activate «Kids Mode». Only those who know the code can leave this mode.
How to make iOS devices childproof
Apple only allows one account per device. However, you can set up a code lock under «Settings > General > Restrictions» and make your mobile phone childproof. All you need to do is activate the restrictions and enter a PIN code. You can then switch off individual apps and functions and set the age rating under «Permitted content» - for app, film or music content. And under «Data protection» you can determine whether your child is allowed to change the basic settings.
Is the user setting not available on your smartphone? Then set up the «Kids Place» app. For example, you can use it to specify that your child can no longer exit the app without you entering the PIN first. You can also set which apps, websites and videos your child is allowed to see. If you activate the «Autostart Kids Place» function, the app will run automatically every time the account is restarted. For around CHF 20, you can also get the premium version with additional functions such as blocking call functions or the internet.
With all these options, you should always bear this in mind: The most important safety precaution is you! Don't rely on parental controls alone. Guide your child in the use of digital devices. And make sure that they behave responsibly online.
