From my upper secondary school classroom, the day-to-day work of a commercial clerk (EFZ) didn't seem particularly exciting to me. What's more, both my parents work in the commercial sector. Following in their footsteps seemed impossible to me.
So I first attended various careers information days and tried my hand at being an optician, a hotel manager, a draughtswoman – and finally a bank clerk. That's when I realised: this job suits me perfectly, despite my initial reservations.
I can change departments every term, which keeps the course interesting.
The next question was about the working environment. I did work experience placements at a trust company, an insurance firm and, finally, at Altdorf local council. I felt at home at the council straight away; the atmosphere amongst colleagues was relaxed and very friendly. I applied there with complete confidence for an apprenticeship as a commercial clerk (EFZ) and was accepted.
What I particularly like about my work is that I get to tackle a variety of tasks involved in parish life. You hear this time and again from parish office trainees, but it's simply true: I'm learning skills here that will stand me in good stead for life. Whether I have to organise a move or fill in my tax return later on, I'll be well prepared.
What's more, during my three-year apprenticeship, I can switch departments every term, which keeps the training interesting. So far, I've worked in the building control office, the tax office and the residents’ registration office. I'm currently working in the legal department. I'm learning something new everywhere I go.
I'm doing my apprenticeship to qualify for the vocational baccalaureate. Who knows, perhaps I'll want to study marketing or tourism at a higher technical college later on.
