Experience

… Everyone feels at home in a youth hostel: the atmosphere has always been relaxed and friendly. Families in particular get the most out of Swiss youth hostels. After all, a holiday in a youth hostel is all about spending time together. The hostels offer the perfect conditions for this: cosy communal areas for an exciting games evening, play corners for the little ones, games rooms – some with table tennis, table football or computer games – or a large garden to run around in. And don’t worry: children’s laughter isn’t just tolerated here, it’s part of the atmosphere.

… The Swiss Youth Hostel network comprises around 50 hostels across all four regions of the country and is divided into three categories: «Basic», «Classic» and «Top». Thanks to their mostly central locations, they are easily accessible by public transport. Many youth hostels also include a day pass for local public transport for the duration of your stay.

… What girl wouldn’t love to be a lady of the castle for a weekend? And what boy doesn’t dream of playing at being a knight for a few days in a real castle? This dream can come true: some youth hostels are situated within the historic walls of a castle or palace. A real highlight for castle enthusiasts is the Burgdorf Youth Hostel, which features a museum.

Various hostels have their own restaurant or offer a communal kitchen where you can cook for yourself. Packed lunches can also be ordered on request if you're out and about during the day.

… If you're looking to enjoy an active holiday, youth hostels are the perfect choice. In summer, the hostels in the mountains are ideal for mountain bikers and hikers, whilst in winter they are perfectly situated for winter sports enthusiasts. It goes without saying that these youth hostels provide storage facilities for skis and bikes. In rural areas, the programme includes cycling or exploring the region on foot, whilst youth hostels near the water cater to water lovers of all ages. For a short city break with cultural activities and shopping, the hostels in the cities are the perfect choice.

Good to know:

… Swiss Youth Hostels take great care to ensure that the environmental footprint of their overnight stays is as small as possible. For this reason, any CO₂ offsetting that guests voluntarily arrange via myclimate.org for their stay is matched by Swiss Youth Hostels. However, this commitment to the environment also extends to the sustainability of the hostels themselves, for example through Minergie-certified buildings and solar panels, as well as the use of regional produce in the kitchen.
